5 Ways to Stay Active at Your Desk Job

Many of us have jobs that require us to sit at desks or several hours per day. After sitting for almost 10 hours a day in our office, we all go home sat in a car to sit, at the dining table for dinner, and finally slumped on the sofa to unwind the day’s stress. So much sitting and no physical activity at all. This won’t end up well, if continued everyday. Sedentary lifestyles are extremely common, but it’s taking its toll on health and productivity. It’s time to get active at your desk as too much sitting can cause the many health ailments such as heart disease, Severe back and neck pain because of poor posture, increased stress level and weak bones. When you stay active at your work desk, not only your health improves, but your mindset and energy will also be improved. An active person is more productive at work.

Here are 5 ways you can be more active at your desk job to be more productive at work and improve your overall health.

  1. Take hourly breaks. Too much sitting can be really bad for your health. Taking intermittent breaks from work not only improves health but also boost performance.
  2. Use a stand up desk. When you work at your desk while standing, you improve your posture and circulation, which will averse the effects of sitting. You don’t have to go on full day standing at work, but intermittently you can add working while standing to your every day routine.
  3. Do some desk exercise. You can do stretching, muscle-strengthening, and even short stints of aerobic exercises right at your desk Sitting for long hours produce back pain, headache and listlessness. Sitting makes you less productive. These simple work exercises such as arm / leg stretch, some neck exercises, shoulder press etc. can add some activity to your otherwise static routine.
  4. Walking meetings Try doing this, it will make you active. Ditch those stuffy boardroom meetings, where you will sit for hours and hours discussing agenda. Keep it moving. Whether it’s taking a call whilst walking around the block, having a gym session while talking shop or taking a meeting on to the road, it all helps in keeping your body moving.
  5. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. It’s hard to say “no” to taking the elevator. But there’s no easier way to do your cardio during working hours than by taking a few flights of stairs. Opting for stairs can increase your heart rate, improves your energy level, and can increase the function of your immune system.

It is impossible to do less work and more play because of the demanding work commitments these days, you can still chose to live an active and healthy life with these quick to adapt changes in the way you spend your hours at your desk job.
